Tryouts happen at the start of every autumn quarter, and sometimes again in the winter if needed. No prior experience is required! During tryouts, we look for students who are strong speakers and excited to learn. The process simply helps us get a sense of your skills and how you'll fit with the team 😊
Fall tryouts are happening now! Check out our How to Join page for more information and to sign up.
There is a per-quarter membership fee, along with minimal expenses for each tournament. The club frequently fundraises to help reduce costs for all members, and donations are always welcome. If covering expenses is ever a concern, please don't hesitate to reach out—we never want finances to be a barrier to joining or participating in DSUW.
We mainly compete in IPDA (International Public Debate Association) and BP (British Parliamentary) debate. Our team also takes part in a variety of speech events, and members can choose which events they'd like to compete in. While IPDA, BP, and speech are our main focus, we're always open to members exploring other formats—though they may not always be offered at the tournaments we attend as a team. If there's a specific format you'd like to try, feel free to chat with our coaches or our president about representing DSUW at another tournament!
We usually attend regional and national tournaments, including the Seattle Classic, which we host here at UW! This past year, our team competed in a total of five tournaments over the autumn and winter quarters, and some members also took part in online or BP tournaments individually.
To join the team, you must attend tryouts! Follow us on Instagram at @uwdebatesociety for all information regarding tryouts. You can also support the team through donations or by volunteering at events like the Seattle Classic. If you have any questions, just reach out—we're happy to help!
